I was curious to visit Maronal after I saw a photo, similar to this one, of Kama (Oni Aĩvo) on the wall of the office of the Union of Indigenous Nations (UNI) in the city of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre State. Her sister Linda (Lindomar), who showed me the picture, became my guide and companion.

The Marubo people united after exploitation by rubber tappers and loggers. They live in maloca communities, preserving their surroundings. In 1990, they were fighting for land recognition, which was achieved in Terra Indígena Vale do Javari seven years later. Recent attacks in the area have resulted in tragic incidents, including deaths of indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips.
