Kënampa (or Miguel) is a leader of his people in the community of Maronal. He uses the beaded ornaments made from the shells of river snails, which are a Marubo trademark. The Marubo do not have a subservient relationship with their leaders like non-Indigenous people; rather they were brought together in the past by charismatic and influential leaders.

The Marubo people united after exploitation by rubber tappers and loggers. They live in maloca communities, preserving their surroundings. In 1990, they were fighting for land recognition, which was achieved in Terra Indígena Vale do Javari seven years later. Recent attacks in the area have resulted in tragic incidents, including deaths of indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips.
