Valdina (Yove), Eunice (Peko), and Elisa Tsainama (Kena) soon took to me. They wanted me to photograph them with their beads. This created a feeling of empathy between us. The Marubo are divided into nine clans originating from mythological heroes; they are known to intermarry with other Marubo clans. However, the children remain connected belong to the mother’s side of the family.

The Marubo people united after exploitation by rubber tappers and loggers. They live in maloca communities, preserving their surroundings. In 1990, they were fighting for land recognition, which was achieved in Terra Indígena Vale do Javari seven years later. Recent attacks in the area have resulted in tragic incidents, including deaths of indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips.
