I was struck by the strength and unity that Luiza (Yovë) and her husband Esmael (Chorimpa) showed. He is dressed for hunting, an essential skill for the young to master. Hunting skills increase social respect for the hunter.

The Marubo people united after exploitation by rubber tappers and loggers. They live in maloca communities, preserving their surroundings. In 1990, they were fighting for land recognition, which was achieved in Terra Indígena Vale do Javari seven years later. Recent attacks in the area have resulted in tragic incidents, including deaths of indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips.
