My “young assistant” would come to my hammock smiling every morning and take me to a new location for me to photograph, becoming my travel companion. Growing up in the safety of the maloca, playing together in total freedom, and being lovingly nurtured by the adults, the children tend to emanate enormous confidence and joy.

The Yanomami, once in the Parima Mountains, now reside in valleys due to historical invasions. They have a population of about 38,000, with three primary languages. In 1990, Mirella Ricciardi supported their territory demarcation, which was achieved in 1992. In 2022, a new mining invasion caused a humanitarian tragedy surpassing the challenges of 1990.
