The relationship between the people and the birds of the forest is an emblem of the harmony between the inhabitants and their natural habitat. The Ashaninka are creators of forests. They enrich the native forest with plants they need and grow new forests in degraded areas, which they call “agroforests.”
The Ashaninka, descendants of the Antis who once inhabited the eastern Andes, have resisted subjugation for centuries. Their distinctive architecture, clothing, and family house organization reflect their enduring culture. Their territory spans the eastern Andes to Acre, with around 100,000 Ashaninka, including 2,000 in Brazil. Mirella Ricciardi supported their fight for the demarcation of the Terra Indígena do Rio Amônia, achieved in 1992.
