Rafael wanted to see me work the camera. He followed my movements and stood quietly beside me smoking his pipe. The traits of the Ashaninka often suggest their Peruvian ancestry. Despite centuries of exploitation and interference, they have retained their uniqueness, religion, architecture, clothing, customs, and language.

The Ashaninka, descendants of the Antis who once inhabited the eastern Andes, have resisted subjugation for centuries. Their distinctive architecture, clothing, and family house organization reflect their enduring culture. Their territory spans the eastern Andes to Acre, with around 100,000 Ashaninka, including 2,000 in Brazil. Mirella Ricciardi supported their fight for the demarcation of the Terra Indígena do Rio Amônia, achieved in 1992.
