Rafael borrowed my mirror and did his makeup. While many peoples of the Amazonian forest paint their entire bodies with intricate designs, the Ashaninka, who wear kushmas, focus on the face. They obtain the deep red pigment they typically use from the fruits of the annatto plant, which they grow for this purpose.

The Ashaninka, descendants of the Antis who once inhabited the eastern Andes, have resisted subjugation for centuries. Their distinctive architecture, clothing, and family house organization reflect their enduring culture. Their territory spans the eastern Andes to Acre, with around 100,000 Ashaninka, including 2,000 in Brazil. Mirella Ricciardi supported their fight for the demarcation of the Terra Indígena do Rio Amônia, achieved in 1992.
