I came across this girl, Mathawo Piyãko, sitting outside the thatched roof of her house, she did not move when I pointed my camera at her. She gently raised her hand to her chest and granted me this wonderful image. The Ashaninka often keep parrots as pets, which are humanized and raised as part of the family.

The Ashaninka, descendants of the Antis who once inhabited the eastern Andes, have resisted subjugation for centuries. Their distinctive architecture, clothing, and family house organization reflect their enduring culture. Their territory spans the eastern Andes to Acre, with around 100,000 Ashaninka, including 2,000 in Brazil. Mirella Ricciardi supported their fight for the demarcation of the Terra Indígena do Rio Amônia, achieved in 1992.
