MR3833 · Kenya · 1967 image reworked by artist in 2018
Warriors and their girls running to join dancers in the Manyatta. “On the first day of the ceremony, I was awoken at six o’clock in the morning by cries and chanting. From my tent I saw a bedlam of warriors dancing around the entire manyatta (village). There must have been at least five hundred of them, many wearing lion’s manes and ostrich plumes on their heads.
The nomadic and pastoralist Maasai people are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands.
