The head dress worn by this young Maasai warrior made from a colobus monkey skin demonstrates the importance head wear is as a means of nonverbal communication about the wearer’s position in society and the stages in his or her life cycle. It celebrates the artistry of the hat’s which are fashioned from natural materials and objects from the local environment.
The nomadic and pastoralist Maasai people are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands.
