The Yanomami adorn themselves with paint, feathers, scented leaves, and flowers, and they pierce their lower lips and nose with sharp sticks. Body paint and adornments are part of each person’s identity. Red dye, made from annatto, is the most common. Black dye is made from genipap, clay, and ash is also used.
